Systemic Psychotherapy For Individuals

Systemic Psychotherapy for individuals explores the stories and interpersonal patterns which can contribute to and perpetuate difficulty. This way of working understands that problems are multi-layered and shared with others and do not belong to individuals alone.

Taking time to step outside and investigate the habitus we occupy in order to examine our cultural influences and ways of being with others can offer insight, understanding, and opportunities to do things differently. Here we explore how difficulties might be maintained and what resources and restraints exist when attempting to bring about change.

Individuals access Systemic Psychotherapy to:

  • Reflect on experiences and patterns of relationships.
  • Focus on individual needs, hopes dreams and aspirations for themselves.
  • Experiment with different positions and ways of relating to others.
  • Explore opportunities to reconnect with absent loved ones.
  • To digest difficult episodes and find ways to move forward from stuckness.
  • Make sense of their experience in context.
  • Prepare for change.

Who Should Attend Systemic Psychotherapy Sessions?

Individuals are invited to attend by themselves and with loved ones if helpful. I endeavour to find ways that enable people to access support that feels comfortable and manageable. If you have any needs that would be important to consider or any concerns about barriers to being able to attend, then these can all be discussed in our initial consultation.

What If I'm Not Sure about What The Problem Is?

It is not uncommon for people to access individual Psychotherapy feeling confused about their situation and through meeting together, we can formulate an understanding of what might be happening in context enabling a feeling of safer uncertainty.

What If Talking Is Too Difficult?

Talking can be difficult and so during these times I draw on creative methods including writing, imagery, and movement to support people in being able to express themselves and experience their ideas. I invite clients to keep diaries of their thoughts and experiences between sessions also. Working together can be online and through face-to-face appointments which often people prefer.

Can I Access Other Support At The Same Time?

It is not uncommon to meet with different therapists and trial different ways of working to find what fits best. There is no obligation to sign up to a long piece of work together as sessions are reviewed each time. Where helpful I am happy to liaise with other services supporting clients simultaneously and this can be discussed when developing a working contract together.

How Long Do Systemic Psychotherapy Sessions last?

Sessions are usually between 60-90mins, and are held at the Practice Rooms in Bristol Therapy Rooms to Rent in The Practice Rooms | Cotham Hill, Bristol. I encourage families to attend fortnightly to sustain momentum. Progress continues to be reviewed each session and plans for ongoing work are discussed. In my experience families benefit from this additional space together and then taking the time to pause to digest, experiment and integrate the differences that emerge from sessions.

Please contact me on the details provided above for a brief complimentary telephone consultation where we can discuss your concerns. I would be happy to answer any questions you might have about the process and our working together.
